Since we’re in the business of selling ice cream, we like to spotlight some of our favorite cold treats and have some fun on the blog giving an overview of the history that is this amazing dessert that so many have come to love over the decades. For this week’s post, we’re covering 3 fun facts about ice cream cones.
1. The very first ice cream cone was introduced in 1896.
While the first patent was given to Italo Marchiony, the concept really took off at the 1904 St. Louis World’s fair when an ice cream vendor and a Syrian vendor selling zalabis (a crisp pastry) joined forces to provide fairgoer’s with a way to eat their ice cream when they ran out of bowls. Once he folded and cooled his pastries in a cone shape and ice cream was filled inside, it was an instant hit.
2. The grid at the bottom of some ice cream cones is for prevention.
For the flat style airy ice cream cones, a grid was design to provide strength. It supports the weight of the ice cream placed on top, offers a place for melting ice cream to collect into and is an anti-crushing and anti-soggy mechanism as someone holds and eats their ice cream.
3. Americans eat the most ice cream.
Ice cream isn’t just a nostalgic treat here, it’s also something we Americans eat a lot of. According to research, 90% of households eat ice cream and the average person consumes up to 48 pints each year of ice cream.
