Back to School Tips for Teachers: Have an Ice Cream Party

Summer vacation is coming to a close. Soon, you’ll have to devise daily lesson plans, homework assignments, and group activities. Most kids aren’t looking forward to this, but you can ease their transition back to school with a bit of creativity. 

While many teachers think of an ice cream party as an end of school activity, it can work equally well at the beginning too. 

The trick is to make the ice cream party a reward.

That’s right: don’t give it a way for free. Inform your students that they’ll get an ice cream party if they accomplish pre-defined goals. For example, you could keep a tally of how often the entire class completes their homework; if the whole class does their homework for the entire month, then you can give them the ice cream party as a reward. 

Another idea is to team up with other teachers. Try organizing a friendly competition between classrooms. For example, you could have a math contest, a spelling bee, a debate, or trivia.
