How to Make Fried DoughFebruary 15, 2016
Fried dough is a delicious treat served at many fairs, carnivals, and events hosted by Ice Scream Social. You can make fried dough at home with a few simple ingredients.
Combine 2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, and ¾ teaspoon salt. Work in 2 tablespoons cold unsalted butter using a pastry blender, a mixer, or your fingers. Then add ¾ cup lukewarm water to make a soft dough. Cover the dough and let it rest for 15 minutes. Separate the dough into eight pieces and roll each into a round piece 3/8 inch thick and 5 inches in diameter.
Pour about 3/8 inch vegetable oil into an electric frying pan or a pan over a burner and heat it to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the dough in the oil one piece at a time. Cook it for 60 seconds. It should puff up on top and be light brown on the bottom. Flip it over and cook it another 60 seconds, until it is light brown on the other side. Don’t let the dough get too dark or it will be too crispy.
Remove the dough from the oil and set it on a baking sheet lined with paper towels. Place the baking sheet in an oven heated to 200 degrees Fahrenheit to keep it warm while you fry the rest of the dough.
Serve the fried dough warm with the topping of your choice. You can try maple syrup, cider syrup, confectioner’s sugar, cinnamon sugar, or marinara sauce and cheese.
