Should You Share Ice Cream with Your Dog?July 10, 2019
Here at Ice Scream Social, we love dogs as much as we love ice cream. Our four-legged friends have become a staple in homes across the nation. Today pets are playing an even more integral role in the lives of their owners. From going along for vacations to sleeping nearby and even eating together at mealtime. Studies even show that professional career success is linked to having a pet in your life as a child.
Is Ice Cream Safe for Dogs?
With all of this extra bonding happening and lines becoming more blurred, it’s important to remember that pets still have some boundaries when compared to their human companions. They can’t withstand the same temperatures outdoors or even eat the same exact foods. But what about our favorite – ice cream? The answer to whether or not dogs can have ice cream is a bit complex. Yes, and many of them do enjoy the cold treat as much as we do! But for some breeds, it could lead to stomach upset.
Best Ice Cream Options
The key thing to remember if you’re going to give your dog the occasional ice cream treat is that vanilla with no flavorings or add-ins (especially no xylitol) should be used. Many sugars, sugar substitutes, nuts and other ingredients used in ice cream can be highly toxic to dogs. Plus too much lactose can harm their bellies. If you’re worried about stomach upset, plain frozen yogurt and vegan ice cream made from frozen, blended bananas is another option.
